We know that the process of getting your permit all the way to your drivers license can seem stressful and complicated. Below is a step by step process that should help you understand where to to start, and how the process and timeline works.
Complete Online Class Instruction.
Registration for the online classroom instruction component of the drivers education process is included in our packages. The State of Indiana requires students to spend at least 30-hours on an instructional course and have it 100% before getting a drivers license. Students can still get their permit before they have completed the online portion of drivers education. The course will help students pass the written exam in order to obtain their learner’s permit. Students need to be at least 15 years old before you can start the online course.
Take the Written Exam at BMV to obtain Learner's Permit.
In order to take the written exam at the BMV the student must be at least 15 years old. If the student is 15, you will also need the CDE Form (Certificate of Drivers Education Enrollment) that you can download and print from the account info page of your online account. Students do not need to have online 100% completed in order to take written exam.
Practice Driving after Obtaining Permit.
Students need to start logging their hours as they drive. Students are required to have a minimum of 50 hours of driving practice. Of the 50 hours 10 of those hours need to be after sunset. To maximize student learning behind the wheel we recommend having at least 5 to 10 hours of practice before driving with an instructor.
Drive with an Instructor for 6 hours.
Contact 10&2 Driving School to start driving with a licensed instructor. The State of Indiana requires that a student drive 6 hours with an instructor as part of the licensing process. Some students benefit from additonal hours of practice with an instructor but 6 hours is the minimal State of Indiana requirment.
Complete 50 hours of Supervised Driving.
Students need to complete 50 hours of supervised driving practice. 10 of the 50 hours are to be "night-time" hours, completed after sunset. The 6 hours completed with your instructor DO count towards the 50 total hours.
Take BMV Driving Test with 10&2 Driving School
Students will be able to take the driving skills test with 10&2 Driving School as long as the student completed the online course and the 6 hours behind-the-wheel training through 10&2 Driving School. Tests cannot be given the same day a student finishes the 6th drive. Students must have their permit with them.
Students that choose not to take the driving skills test with the 10&2 Driving School will be able to take the driving skills test at an Indiana BMV branch. Students will need a certificate of completion from the 10&2 Driving School in order to take driving skills test.
Getting Driver's License at Indiana BMV.
Completing a driver's education program allows students to get their driver's license at 16-years and 90-days old. Students will need to get their certificate of completion from both the online course and behind the wheel training, as well as complete the 50 hour supervised driving log.
